SLC and BLG announce focus on CMA legal services study

The Society of Licensed Conveyancers (SLC) and the Bold Legal Group (BLG) have decided to make an important adjustment to the programme for their 2017 Spring Roadshows to include an item on the CMA Legal services market study which makes some radical recommendations about transparency for legal services regulators to implement. SLC and BLG both believe that there is a window of opportunity for the conveyancing profession to make proposals on how the recommendations should be applied by regulators and best serve consumers and the profession alike.

Simon Law, SLC Chairman said “it looks like conveyancing is seen as the first discipline of law that the Legal Services Board has decided to focus on to implement the CMA recommendations. Whilst the SLC has called for a specific market study by the CMA on conveyancing and in particular the role of mortgage lenders, we cannot simply sit by and watch new regulatory requirements being descended on the profession which may be entirely inappropriate. It behoves us as a profession to provide a strong voice about the CMA recommendations and how they could be implemented without adversely affecting consumers and lawyers alike. We are asking all our members to make a special effort to attend the Spring Roadshows and have their say on this most important issue.”

Rob Hailstone, BLG Founder and CEO commented “The Bold Legal Group is a help, advice and support network for conveyancers. Representing its member’s interests and ensuring that they have an effective voice in respect of important issues is paramount. The CMA market study recommendations, if poorly implemented, could have a profound and lasting negative impact on conveyancing firms and it is, therefore, vital that as a profession we help shape our own destiny. The Roadshows provide a timely and unique opportunity to get input from conveyancers of all types and size to deliver constructive proposals to regulators on implementing the CMA’s recommendations.”

The CMA session will be led by Richard Hinton of Pitsford Consulting who has undertaken a lot of research on this subject and taken soundings from many relevant stakeholders.

The Roadshows will be held in Exeter (10th May), Woking (16th May), Leicester (17th May) and Newcastle (24th May) and to book a place, or for more information e-mail ania@conveyancers.org.uk or call 08714 237193. The Roadshows carry 4 CPD points, are free to attend for SLC and BLG members and are very reasonably priced at £75.00 for non-members (which includes all refreshments and lunch).

The Roadshows are sponsored by PSG, Stewart Title, FCI and Howden.

The agenda also features a plenary on ID Verification and fraud, a presentation on Cyber Insurance, the conveyancing professions’ recommendations to Government on Leasehold Reform and a regulators update from the CLC.
