Tom Lyes Director of Engagement, Lawyer Checker confirms:

“Cyber-crime is a growing issue for conveyancers handling large transactions on a regular basis.  According to the recent SRA Thematic Review on Cyber Security, £2.5million worth of client money was stolen in the first six months of 2020.

“Between January and May 2021, 57% of all SRA alerts issued, relate to email fraud or phishing attempts.  This is often where sophisticated fraudsters impersonate a real law firm, usually through phishing emails, attempting to divert property transaction funds into their own accounts.

“Cyber-crime doesn’t discriminate; it effects the biggest and the smallest and all those in between.  Fraudsters thrive in a busy market, and they have been quick to take advantage of the increased vulnerabilities introduced with remote working.  Therefore, it is more important than ever that staff are educated about the tell-tale signs.  For this reason, we have now developed a free webinar covering this critical topic with the aim of helping firms mitigate the risk of fraud.”

Jeremy Dorkins, UK Director of Customer Success at poweredbypie explains:

“In the session, we will share hints and tips about fraud and cyber-crime prevention covering staff education, password security, how to carry out an independent audit of your cyber security plus how to reduce the chances of a criminal impersonating staff and their email addresses, in addition to monitoring email passwords that are for sale on the dark web.

“With conveyancers one of the most targeted sectors in the industry, firms have a responsibility to their clients but also need to protect their own businesses and reputation.  A strong awareness of the current fraud landscape across conveyancing can help firms implement appropriate cyber-crime prevention strategies through a combination of the education of staff and informed decision making. This webinar will now help legal professionals by providing the most up to date information and advice to help mitigate the risk of cyber-crime within their organisation.”

After the webinar participants will also be invited to a demonstration of Lawyer Checker.  Should they wish to attend, conveyancers can discover how using Lawyer Checker’s Account & Entity Screen can verify the details of the recipient account of the solicitor receiving funds for every property transaction quickly and easily.
