Convey Law helps to raise over £90,000 for charity in 2021

CONVEY Law has donated £1000 to the National Deaf Children’s Society (NCDS) after it was nominated for help by a member of staff who lost her own hearing after suffering meningitis.

It has also donated a further £3000 to charity in the last month bringing to over £90,000 the amount the leading conveyancing practice and its charitable arm The Conveyancing Foundation have helped to raise for charity in 2021.

The funds were all raised by the Convey Law team and through other legal practices taking part in the Foundation’s Charity Lotto.

Emma Robinson, a Conveyancer at Convey Law, who has volunteered with NDCS since 2017, nominated them for a donation in recognition of their support for deaf children.

Emma, who lost her hearing at 18 months after suffering from meningitis and was later fitted with a cochlear implant, said the charity relied entirely on donations to carry on its vital work helping to overcome barriers for deaf children.

She explained: “I was left profoundly deaf after meningitis. At the time, there wasn’t a lot of support for my parents. Options were so limited and there was no information available and they were left completely in the dark about what to do.

I heard about NDCS later in life. They were exactly what my parents would have wanted as a resource all those years ago and I just wanted to give back and help them.”

Emma, who now volunteers as a ‘Deaf Role Model Presenter’ said she speaks to parents of newly diagnosed deaf children “to basically tell them that a diagnosis of hearing loss is not a death sentence and in fact it is entirely the opposite”.

She said: “There are a lot of assumptions about those with hearing loss and what they can and cannot do and I tell them that there is nothing we can’t do, we might just have to do it a little differently”.

It isn’t life limiting and it is possible to function like a ‘normal’ hearing person. NDCS host training courses, roadshow workshops, sign language courses, provide mentoring support for deaf young people as well as helping with grants to get equipment to assist a deaf child”.

All their events are completely free and are held in cities all over the UK and the money that has been kindly donated to them – such as this donation from Convey Law – helps with these. It is especially critical at the moment as COVID has meant they have not been able to host their usual fundraisers”.

Convey Law is one of a growing number of companies raising funds for charity through The Conveyancing Foundation’s Charity Lotto where clients of any legal practice or property company can donate a voluntary £10 at the end of their transaction, giving them a chance to win £500 in a monthly draw.

Managing Director Lloyd Davies explained: “Charitable giving is very important to us as a company and asking staff to nominate charities is a great way for them to benefit from the funds they have helped to raise by enabling them to choose charities close to their hearts. I am very proud that we have helped to raise over £90,000 for charity in this year alone.”

A donation of £1000 was also made to Convey Law IT Support Technician Kelvin Horne’s “Movember” Campaign after he took part in the annual Prostate Cancer UK appeal for the fourth year running.

He said: “Initially, I started supporting Movember to help make people aware of various men’s health conditions but last year, I also lost an uncle to prostate cancer. The support that the charity provided to him and to my wider family was absolutely amazing during what was a very difficult time.

Thanks to Convey Law’s huge donation, I have raised around £1200 for Movember this year which will hopefully help enable them to continue their amazing work in the future and beyond.”

A dementia group in South Wales has also received a donation of £1000 which will help to provide vital support services for the elderly and those suffering with dementia.

Convey Law Legal Director Phill Edwards nominated the Llanhilleth Dementia Friendly and Living Alone Group for help after finding out their funding had been badly hit during the pandemic.

He said: “This a local charity close to my heart. It is run by volunteers within the village of Llanhilleth.  I think we all know or have sadly lost someone to this awful disease which is on the increase.  The group has been unable to operate during the pandemic and only recently reopened and they only have limited funding.  The running of the group depends mainly on local donations and collections around the village and in the chapel.

The group provides a wonderful day out, once a month for those suffering with the awful disease and also their loved ones/carers who often have no one else to talk to.

They provide activities, dances, a hot meal and local singers attend to provide entertainment.  They also provide one to one talks and help for those caring for their loved ones and they put them on the right path for help they may need.  The group is well attended and the return of the monthly get-together has been long awaited by those needing that day away from their own home where they often feel trapped.”

A further £1000 donation was made to Brian Woods’ high-profile challenge for Walking with the Wounded where he undertook a Marathon every day in November to run a total of 635 miles. Brian has so far raised over £168,000 of his £175,000 target.

Georgia Davies from The Conveyancing Foundation said the Lotto had helped companies raise over £800,000 for their chosen charities over the last decade.

She explained: “We can help any legal practice or property company raise money through the Charity Lotto. It’s a simple mechanism where clients can donate a voluntary £10 at the end of their transaction, giving them a chance to win £500 in a monthly draw.”

She added: “I am delighted to see some of funds raised by Convey Law clients going to such deserving charities. We are very keen to help others fundraise for charities through our Charity Lotto so please do get in touch.”
