Red Tape Challenge to look at reducing bureaucracy in legal services

The Government’s bureaucracy-busting ‘Red Tape Challenge’ is to look at legal services in June.  The SRA is welcoming the chance to look at further opportunities to reduce regulatory burdens that inhibit the running of successful practices, using outcome focused regulation as an example of how they are already taking bureaucracy reducing measures.
The Red Tape Challenge is turning its attention to legal services from 31 May to 21 June.
The regulated community and the public are able to take part in an online discussion about what they see as unnecessary regulations which would speed up working practices if removed.  These suggestions could be dealt with directly by the SRA and other regulators, or by the Government if legislation is needed to be changed.
Antony Townsend, Chief Executive of the SRA, commented:
“The Red Tape Challenge for us is really an extension of what we’re already aiming to achieve through OFR. We’ve replaced the old detailed Solicitors’ Code of Conduct with a set of principles and indicative behaviours that should help reduce unnecessary regulation.
“If there are regulatory requirements that could genuinely be removed, then we want to hear about it. We’ll give proper consideration to whatever’s on the table and we look forward to seeing what kind of debates develop.”
Regulation will be just one of the subjects looked at within legal services.  Others include distress for rent and bailiff action, sentencing and rehabilitation, criminal justice and claims management.
The online discussions can be found on the www.redtapechallenge.cabinetoffice.gov.uk.
