Law Society welcomes solicitor as new lord chancellor

David Gauke has been warmly welcomed as the new lord chancellor by the Law Society of England and Wales.

“We congratulate David Gauke on being appointed lord chancellor and secretary of state for justice,” Law Society president Joe Egan said.

David Gauke was elected Conservative MP for South West Hertfordshire in 2005. He is a former solicitor and served in a variety of roles in government, including most recently as secretary of state for work and pensions.

“The lord chancellor plays a vital role in upholding the rule of law and providing support to the legal sector,” Joe Egan said.

“David Gauke will be inheriting the role at a time of challenge for the legal sector. Priorities include promoting access to justice, ensuring the viability of legal aid and delivering an effective court modernisation programme.

“In addition, the lord chancellor will be a prominent voice as we seek to gain the best possible deal for the UK legal sector in the government’s negotiations for a new relationship with the European Union post-Brexit.

“We look forward to creating a close and effective working relationship with the new lord chancellor to build on the successes of the legal sector.”
