Bank details fraud warning

Bank details fraud warning

Solicitors are being targeted by fraudsters trying to obtain client bank details, warns the Law Society of Scotland.

Con artists are carrying out scams by calling lawyers pretending to be from bank fraud or relationship management teams.

Director of financial compliance at the Law Society, Ian Messer, said: "This continues to be a serious current threat to law firms.

The callers appear to be knowledgeable, may have appropriate identification and are persistent and we want to remind our members that they should never give out account information to callers.

Mr Messer warned that the criminals may ask for bank cards to be inserted into the card reader for verification even if staff have already declined to give out information.

He went on to say:"This is another way in which account information can be obtained and we are reminding our members that bank staff will never make these type of calls.

If calling the bank back to verify a call, our advice is to be sure to disconnect from the caller and call the bank back from a different phone.”

The Society has also received reports from about emails from the website ‘Solicitors from Hell.net’, which contain the subject title, ‘SolicitorsFromHell.net article regarding your firm’ and has warned people not to open them or click on any of the links.

Mr Messer concluded: "It is essential that all cashroom managers and cashroom staff are aware of this risk."
