Could tighter restrictions mean home moves stop?

There’s been no escaping the news that the new variant of Covid-19 is rampantly spreading its way across the UK. Whilst we continue to roll out the vaccine, calls for tighter restrictions are being called for as deaths have increased to over 1,000 over the last few days.

Now the government is facing calls to tighten restrictions further, with calls for a lockdown which look a lot like the one implemented on 23 March 2020, being recommended.

Professor Chris Witty appeared on the BBC, saying these next few weeks “will be the worst”.

What would a tighter lockdown look like for the property sector?

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has issued a stark warning, that closing the housing market down would be considered.

In the latest guidance update on moving homes, MHCLG has stated:

“It may become necessary to pause all home moves locally or nationally for a short period of time to manage the spread of coronavirus. We will let you know if this needs to happen.”

Do you think the property market will remain open? If the market does close, what impact will that have on conveyancers?
