Paragon Buy to Let Debate

The Great Buy-to-Let Debate hosted by The Wriglesworth Consultancy took place in London last week, with key figures and journalists within the property industry in attendance to discuss the latest issues in the lettings market. The panel following a BBC Question Time format and chaired by John Wriglesworth, compromised:
John Heron, Managing Director of Paragon Mortgages
Valerie Bannister, the National Property Director of Your Move and Vice-President of ARLA
David Whittaker, Managing Director, Mortgages for Business
Alan Ward, Chairman Residential Landlords Association
Sebastian O’Kelly, Director The Leasehold Knowledge Partnership
The debate highlighted many of the issues surrounding the Buy-to-Let market.
The first question came from Peter Clarkson from LMS who asked the panel will growth of up to 32% in 2013 be repeated. The view was that buy to let is likely to rise between 25% and 32% but with rents increasing less than 5% this year.
Various other topics included government intervention and whether they should help private landlords or first time buyers, fraud and regulation of letting agents and if lenders should be more prudent and hold back on buy to let lending.
