Law Society comments on Government’s response to home buying process

The Law Society has issued its comment on the Government’s response to last year’s ‘Call for Evidence – Improving the Home Buying and Selling Process’.

The document brings together a summary of the feedback received as well as how the government plans to act going forward, with the three areas of action highlighted as improving consumer experience, reducing time from offer to completion and reducing failed transactions.

Joe Egan, president of the Law Society stated:

“We have been very clear the home buying process can, and should, be made easier and more efficient for both home buyers and sellers.

“The government’s announcements are a good start and we are working with other parts of the industry to provide some of the solutions proposed.

“As part of our response, we called for more information to be provided to home buyers and sellers upfront, as well as greater consumer protections. These calls were echoed by others and it is pleasing the government has taken many of these suggestions onboard. Delivering greater transparency around referral fees, introducing new professional standards for estate agents, and creating clear guides for both sellers and buyers will all help address frustrations around the process.

“The home buying process doesn’t need to be a labyrinth and we are pleased steps are being taken to address our concerns, the concerns of consumers and the wider industry.”

One Response

  1. LS must be relieved that the government is not following the logic of its own research

Research carried out on the response to their call for evidence shows that customer concern over delay is perceived as a failure by solicitors far more than estate agents but they headline reform of the latter.
