Latest HMLR data shows completed house sales down 21.2% on previous year

The latest data shows that the number of completed house sales in England during December 2017 were down by 21.2% to 62,697 since the previous year.

The most recent HM Land Registry (HMLR) figures show that yearly difference was much more steep than that of November 2017, where completed sales were down by just 5.6% on the level which 2016 saw.

In addition to completion statistics, the House Price Index (HPI) was released today, illustrating the house price changes seen across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK HPI is a joint production by HM Land Registry, Land and Property Services Northern Ireland, Office for National Statistics and Registers of Scotland.

On average, England saw prices rise by 0.2% month-on-month, with an annual rise of 4.1%. This takes the average value of a property up to £242,176.

The most significant price rise on a regional level was seen in the North East, where prices saw a monthly uplift of 3.1%. At the other end of the scale was London, which saw a monthly decline of 2.1%.

In Wales, however, average February house prices experienced a monthly fall of 0.4% month-on-month. On a yearly basis, prices did see an uplift of 4.8%, with the average value of a property recorded at £152,891.

Looking at the UK as a whole, average prices rose by 4.4% in the year to February, seeing a monthly decline of 0.1%. Standing at £225,000, this is up £9,000 on the corresponding month last year.
