Government Announce Infrastructure Funding Increases

A £250 million investment into vital infrastructure has been announced.

The investment, announced by the Chancellor, will attempt to unlock over 20,000 homes nationwide.

The money will be used to pay for schools, roads and public transport in areas of the country where homes are needed and in places people want to live.

The Government are keen to highlight their commitment to improving key infrastructure and have recently placed broadband improvements as a priority.

Opposition parties have claimed the latest announcement could be a way of setting up a manifesto pledge and could appear cynical in light of the upcoming election.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sajid Javid said:

“When I was Housing Secretary, I set this fund up to help ensure homes can be built in areas that need it the most and enable people to live where they want.

“I have now launched an infrastructure revolution and this step-change in funding will ensure that all parts of the country benefit as we level-up opportunities.

“This £250m will increase the number of houses available to buy and help support people to achieve their dream of home ownership.”

Housing Secretary Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP said:

“This Government is committed to building the homes this country needs, so that more people can realise the dream of owning their own home.

“This £250m funding will ensure that communities have the right infrastructure to enable new homes to be built, such as road and transport improvements.”

John McDonnell MP, Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, said:

“After nearly a decade of starving our country of the infrastructure investment it needs, the Tories have come up with this pathetic publicity stunt announcement.

When there are millions of people on our housing waiting lists and families with children living in containers, we need real change and real investment in our infrastructure, not this derisory drop in the ocean.”

How important is infrastructure improvements in order to provide the housing the country needs?
