Diary Of A Highstreet Conveyancer – Monday April 20

Monday

So after having cleared out my filing cabinet and tidied my desk drawers, I got to thinking about what is going to happen. I am sure that like a lot of firms, I have a lot of clients who are patiently waiting for the restricted movement measures to be lifted so that they can move. And when you think about this, you realise that how nice it is not to be working flat out – it is an opportunity to look not only at the world around us, hearing the birds singing and the stillness of the day, but to take stock of our home and working environment.

So once the desk is tidied, think about the future of work. Do you think that you may now see whether you can work from home more? Do you think that you won’t be so keen to beat your record number of completions on the last Friday of the month? Or will we all go back to how we were before? Rushing around, stressing to make sure mortgage monies are received even though we only ordered them the day before completion….not having time to talk to clients properly.

Think about how nice it has been to be able to submit an application through the Land Registry Portal, taking time to make sure that all of the enclosures are correctly identified and lodged. The joy of sending a contract package by email knowing that all of the attachments are clearly labelled for the ease of the buyers’ solicitor. Knowing that you can chat to your clients, other solicitors and still be able to do your work properly.

Take stock of this time and think about it. Conveyancing will carry on – the Ds which lead to people moving house will still be there (being death, divorce , debt and others which I can’t remember at the moment!).

Take time to look around and see how precious life is.

  • “Conveyancing will carry on” but not as we know it”

Hopefully it will become a small part of a multi-function service replacing the consumer’s need to hold onto all the arms of an octopus

  • Not all conveyancers are quiet – some are still working flat out! I work in a team of 5 fee earners and the other 4 have been furloughed. My caseload has increased five-fold and I am working on numerous matters effectively from scratch. Very difficult times.
