National newspaper launches SDLT campaign

Stamp Out The Duty is a campaign launched today, Wednesday 13 January 2021, by The Daily Telegraph, and calls for the stamp duty holiday to be extended.

The newspaper says its campaign is:

“inspired because it fears hundreds of thousands of buyers risk losing out on the current holiday as transactions slow because of the lockdown.”

The campaign is also designed to help inform buyers who may be “caught out” as a result of the transaction process taking 20 weeks as opposed to 12 to complete.

The newspaper is:

“Calling on the Treasury to avoid penalising thousands of homebuyers at a time when mortgage lenders are already demanding vast deposits and household finances have been battered by the pandemic.”

An online petition calling for a 6 month extension to the SDLT holiday, which has been running since October 2020 is now approaching 73,000 signatures. If it gets to 100,000 the government will be obliged to consider holding a debate on the subject.

However, some firms have begun to ramp up their offering to get as many housing transaction pipelines completed as possible.

    Could the Chancellor go some way towards extending the relief by agreeing to the ‘holiday’ if contracts are exchanged by 31 March? That might just ease the pressure cooker building up in my firm and many other law firms. Or, allowing it to continue for another 6 months but taking away the £15,000 saving for the higher transactions? Just a thought.
