Ban on tenants lettings agents’ fees still a year away

The ban on letting agents’ fees for tenants will not come into effect until next year due to the time it will take for it to pass through Parliament.

This is according to the Government who were recently asked by the National Approved Lettings Scheme when the ban was expected to be implemented. The newly named Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government stated that it would come into effect in spring 2019 at the earliest.

According to Letting Agent Today (LAT), the draft Tenant Fees Bill, containing the provision, is undergoing pre-legislative scrutiny by the all-party Communities and Local Government Select Committee.

LAT also reported that the ministry anticipates the ban to come into force in around 15 months time, following intensive scrutiny from both stakeholders and Parliament.
