January Blues

January Blues

Post-Christmas blues, the cold weather, dark evenings, the arrival of the dreaded credit card bills through the letterbox and failed New Year’s Resolutions are all factors which award the third Monday in January the title of Blue Monday.

This year January 19th is the date that researcher’s claim is the most depressing day of the year with experts predicting that those who are partaking in Dry January will be more than likely drowning their sorrows again and those who have given up the cigarettes will be smoking by the end of the weekend.

Plus those that spent a festive period with their loved ones are more than likely going to be chatting to their solicitors rather than their spouses.

If you are starting to feel blue try a few of these ideas to help cheer you and your workplace up:

  1. Try not to be influenced by the suggestion you may be depressed on this day!
  2. Happiness is progress. Do something that you have been dreading, once you have done it, you will feel great!
  3. Learn something new. Achieving a goal or learning something new can be fun and increase your confidence.
  4. Go for a walk at lunchtime. Fresh air can boost your mood and the exercise can get your blood pumping, releasing the feel good endorphins.
  5. Make a list of all the great things about your job.
  6. Share an interesting article or joke with your co-workers.
  7. Compliment your boss. Hopefully they will compliment you back!
  8. Give yourself something to look forward to. Book a holiday, try a new gym class or meet a friend for lunch.
  9. Make an effort to look for the positive things in life – train yourself to notice the good stuff.
  10. Look at your favourite picture, research suggest this can significantly improve our mood.

All of these things can help with the January Blues if we try them, the one thing that can be guaranteed is that if we don’t try to do anything different, or make positive changes, then things will stay the same.
