Conveyancing Data Services – October Reflections

CDS Sales Director, Richard Pickles* discusses what makes the company different and why they sponsor an Olympic rower.

Many of my recent monthly ramblings have concerned Brexit and I think we’ve probably done it to death as a subject right now (although if our politicians etc. keep behaving the way they are now I can see me returning to it very soon!). Instead, I thought I would mull over something completely different this month so here goes…!

The most common question I am asked by potential clients is, “So what makes CDS different from all the other search providers?” The most interesting question is “Why on earth do you sponsor an Olympic rower?” And believe it or not if you dig deep enough the answer to the first question is the reason for the second.

So, cast aside that CDS are fiercely independent, committed to the highest levels of quality, service and support at a fair price, are a national organisation employing our own search agents and have a wealth of experience and you come to something else: call it attitude or call it character, it’s one of those intangible things that makes such a difference to any business, not just ours.

Let’s call it “CDS-ness”.

So why does that relate to sponsoring an Olympic rower?

Back in 2010 when CDS had just got going and were working out of a shed, Will Satch (the oarsman in question) was doing great things as a rower in the junior ranks, but was struggling financially as he was not yet eligible for funding. We spotted that along with his natural talent, he had an enormous amount of determination and commitment to succeed and as he was local to our head office we took the plunge and started our sponsorship.

Fortunately this has paid off handsomely. From winning Bronze at the London 2012 Olympics through being World Champion in 2013, 2014 and 2015, Will finally achieved his ambition by ‘Stroking’ the men’s 8 to victory and a gold medal in Rio earlier this summer. At the same time CDS have continued our own amazing growth and now comfortably sit within the Top 5 search companies.

We share our work ethic, our history and our success. But it’s a bit more than that.

Those of you who have met Will, know what a nice guy he is as well. Easy to get on with and always has a smile on his face.

If you sum all of that lot up, then we sponsor Will Satch, a genuinely great bloke with phenomenal drive and determination who has achieved, and will continue to achieve, something special. And if that’s what “CDS-ness” is then maybe that explains a lot!

In other good news, after months of the Local Authority TATs slowing down following the introduction of the revised Con29 in July, we have finally seen some improvements in September. It’s not massive and there are still some complete howlers, but the general trend is definitely on the way down. The overall averages are still 8 days’ turnaround, so ideally we have a couple of day’s improvement still to make for us to get back to where we were once upon a time!

So another month goes by and generally I think things are holding up remarkably well.

After all, it will soon be Christmas!
