Scam Alert Round up 16th May

Here are the latest scam alerts issued by the Solicitors Regulation Authority

Emails claiming to be from a “Linda McNair” relating to a property conveyance

Emails have been seen that claim to be in connection with a property conveyance. These emails contain attachments it states are conveyancing documents but are likely vehicles for malware delivery. the emails from “statement@nlacpa.com” in the name of “Linda McNair Conveyancer PLS Connect” ask the recipient to “go through” the documents.

The emails list genuine contact details for a genuine firm based in Ilford, Reliance Solicitors Ltd who say they do not employ such an individual an dhave no connection with these emails.

Bogus website www.3hrcorporatesolicitorsltd.com

A website has appeared claiming to be that of a firm named “3HR Corporate Solicitors” listing the address New Broad Street House, 35 New Broad Street, London, EC2M 1NH, telephone 44 203 808 8277 and email: thomasedwardsmiles@3hrcorporatesolicitorsltd.com.

The email requests the recipient make a payment to an offshore trading account. The email also gives the telephone numbers + 44 203 808 8277 and + 44 161 850 4213.

While there is a genuine firm of that name, www.3hrcs.com and Thomas Edward Miles is a solicitor and Director at the firm, neither the firm nor the individual say they are connected with this new website.

Contracts misusing Summerfield Browne Solicitors logos

Members of the public have reported receiving a contratc document claiming to be from Summerfield Browne Limited. the contract is headed with the logo fo the firm but includes the address of 3rd Floor, 207 Regent Street, London, W1B 3HH and a telephone number of 0203 318 8069. The contract was sent by email from James Drislane, who is described as Partner, Head of Business Development and Marketing.

The SRA say the don’t regulate any such individual. Summerfield Browne Limited say they have an appointment only address at 207 Regent Street but that the telephone number listed is not theirs, they do not employ a James Drislane and have no connection with any such contract.

Emails from a “Michael Wistow”

Members of the public have been receiving emails relating to the death of a previously unknown relative and the inheritance they may well be entitled to. The emails come from a “Michael Wistow” using email accounts blawfirmichaelwistowlondon@gmail.com and blawistowfirmlondon@gmail.com as well as a multitude of other email addresses from generic account providers.

A similar scam alert was issued in July 2015.

Whilst Michael Wistow is a genuine solicitor at Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP, neither Mr Wistow nor his firm say they are connected with these emails, and further, do not use any email addresses provided by the likes of gmail or hotmail.
