Manchester City Council has set out ambitious plans to accelerate house building to cope with the need for an estimated 55,000 new homes in the city by 2027.
The “Residential Growth Prospectus” sets out the city’s plans to become the fastest growing city in the UK.
In good news for conveyancers in the north-west, their early estimates suggest 5,000 new homes could be delivered in the next three years, with 13,000 delivered by 2019.
The strategy has six key aims;
1. Building more new homes
2. Creating pathways to home ownership
3. Developing a quality private rented sector
4. Bringing empty homes back into use
5. Planning frameworks to support growth
6. A strong sense of place
Cllr Jim Battle, the council’s deputy leader, said: "Manchester’s strategy is about building new homes and creating jobs. We need to act now to meet demand for the future and to do this we need to stimulate investment in building and bring empty homes back into use.
"The plan is also about creating financial packages that allows households into owner occupation. We believe this combination will not only create homes and neighbourhoods, but jobs, training opportunities and a huge economic boost for our city.
"The plan is ambitious but in Manchester we have the skills and experience to deliver a strategy that will secure Manchester in poll position as an economic driver for the UK.”
